Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, can cause headaches, blurry vision, and dry eyes if left unmanaged. Discover our personalized digital eye strain treatments and enjoy more comfortable vision throughout your day. Book Appointment What Causes Digital Eye Strain? Digital eye strain is caused by the prolonged use of devices like computers, smartphones, and tablets. When focusing intently on screens’ small text and images, our eyes may not get the breaks they need to function properly. Prolonged exposure to screens can also cause symptoms of dry eye disease. The more time we spend on screens, the less we may blink. Decreased blink rate diminishes tear function and can cause blurred vision and a gritty feeling like something is in the eye. Book Appointment Managing Digital Eye Strain Reducing the effects of digital eye strain is all about being mindful of your screen use. As soon as you become aware of how you use screens and how they affect your health, you can make small adjustments to give your eyes a break and see comfortably. The 20-20-20 Rule: The 20-20-20 rule is simple. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break from your screen by looking at an object 20 feet away. This action gives your eyes the chance to refocus and relax so you can reduce damage or discomfort caused by strain. Factors contributing to this trend include an aging population, an increase in habits such as smoking, and exposure to harmful environmental elements, all of which pose significant risks to ocular health. This surge underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, preventive measures, and advancements in treatment options to safeguard our vision for the future. Book Appointment Common Eye Diseases Cataracts: Cataracts can be likened to a foggy window. The eye's lens hardens and becomes opaque, resulting in progressively blurred vision. Although this common condition often presents with few symptoms initially, you may notice a reduction in the vibrancy of colors, difficulties with night vision, and increased sensitivity to glares over time. While aging is a significant contributor to cataract development, it can also be caused by trauma, certain medications, or pre-existing health conditions. Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a stealthy disease that gradually steals peripheral vision, earning its nickname as the "silent thief of sight. " This group of eye conditions damages the optic nerve, usually due to high pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP). As the damage progresses, individuals may experience tunnel vision, which, if not treated, can eventually lead to blindness. Open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, occurs when the drainage canals of the eye become clogged over time, contributing to increased IOP. Everyone considering laser eye surgery needs to have a comprehensive eye exam and consultation. We’ll also be sure to discuss your expectations for the surgery. Many people achieve 20/20 vision after their procedure, but some may still need glasses or contact lenses post-surgery. However, surgery almost always decreases reliance on corrective lenses. To be considered a candidate for laser eye surgery, your eyes must be in good health. Infections, severe dry eye, or recent trauma may mean you’ll need to delay the procedure. Here are a few other considerations for surgery: You must be 18 years of age or older. One of the pillars of diabetic care, yet often undersold or overlooked, is the indispensable link between diabetes and eye health. Wink Eye Care offers specialized eye exams that provide a comprehensive evaluation of your vision and overall eye health, explicitly tailored to the needs of those with diabetes. Book Appointment The Link Between Diabetes and Vision Problems In the world of ophthalmology, diabetes isn't just a health concern; it's an influencer of several serious eye conditions, including: Diabetic Retinopathy: Blood vessels in the retina can be damaged, leading to leakage or growth of abnormal new vessels. Diabetic Macular Edema: A symptom of retinopathy when fluid leaks into the macula, the part of the retina responsible for clear central vision. Glaucoma: An increased fluid pressure in the eye that damages the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. Cataracts: A clouding of the lens that results in blurred vision, typically treatable with surgery. Each condition carries risks and treatments, highlighting the need for vigilance in eye health. Book Appointment Benefits of Regular Eye Exams for Diabetes Patients Consistency is key - and the same philosophy applies to your eye health. Swift care reduces the risk of long-term damage and determines the difference between healing and irreversible vision loss. At Wink Eye Care, we encourage you to contact our main office, a 24/7 emergency line, for any severe circumstances. Book Appointment Common Eye Emergencies Understanding the diverse nature of eye emergencies is the cardinal rule in preparedness. Here are some of the typical scenarios that require immediate attention: Foreign Object in the Eye: A seemingly innocuous event, like a grain of sand or a speck of dust, becoming lodged in the eye, can swiftly become a painful ordeal if not addressed promptly. Often requiring professional removal, ignoring these foreign bodies can lead to scratches or infections. Chemical Burns: Spills or splashes of chemicals are urgent matters that demand immediate care to prevent further damage. Household products, industrial solvents, or otherwise benign substances can all pose severe threats to your vision. Eye Infections: Starting with seemingly minor symptoms, eye infections, if bacterial or viral, can quickly escalate and should be diagnosed early to prevent complications that may affect your vision. Eye Injuries: From a harmless game of sports to routine household tasks, a range of activities carries risks of injury. At Wink Eye Care, your vision is as invaluable as a family heirloom, deserving of the utmost attention and expert care. That's why our comprehensive and routine eye exams go beyond mere measurements; every visit is a heart-to-heart conversation about your visual health. A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough evaluation of the health and function of your eyes, beyond just checking to see if you need glasses. It comprises various tests and evaluations to assess different aspects of your vision, including visual acuity, binocular vision, eye movement, and the optic structures within the eye, such as the retina, macula, and more. This in-depth evaluation can detect issues early, leading to better and more successful treatment outcomes. You might notice sudden changes in your eyesight, or a doctor might have warned you about potential risks during a routine exam. If you feel worried about your eye health, you are not alone. Many people experience these exact fears when learning about diabetes-related vision issues. It's important to know that: Diabetic retinopathy begins with mild swelling in the eye's blood vessels. It can advance to severe blockages and the growth of abnormal new vessels. Doctors can apply targeted lasers to seal leaking blood vessels and stop them from growing. Injections and steroid treatments help reduce swelling and improve vision. You can slow the disease's progression by watching your overall blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure. Here at Wink Eye Care, we believe that understanding the fundamentals of diabetic retinopathy and how this is treated is essential to protecting your eye health. We invite you to reach out to our team if you have any questions or concerns. What Are the Different Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy? Diabetic retinopathy develops in stages, each progressively affecting your vision if left untreated. Recognizing these stages and their effects can help you seek timely care to protect your eyesight. Below, we outline the different stages of diabetic retinopathy and what they mean for your eye health: Mild Nonproliferative Retinopathy is the earliest stage, in which small areas of balloon-like swelling occur in the retina's tiny blood vessels. However, many people do not realize that high anxiety levels can also affect their eyes. The physical toll of stress extends all the way to your vision, creating symptoms that range from mildly annoying to genuinely frightening. In this post, we'll explore how stress affects your eyes and what you can do about it. We will cover the following topics: Eye twitching or muscle spasms around your eyes are usually a normal response to anxiety. Eye pain can be due to eye strain or other bodily responses to stress. Vision changes can occur as your body responds to stressful situations. Protection strategies include the 20-20-20 method, artificial tears, and more. If you find yourself rubbing your eyes or wondering why your sight feels blurry after a tough day, you are not alone. When your body is stressed, it will trigger the "fight or flight" response. This reaction changes how your eyes function and process light. Here at Wink Eye Care, we want you to fully understand what may be happening with your eyes and what you can do about it. Is It Normal to Experience Eye Twitching When I Am Stressed? Yes, it is very common. When tension builds up, your body releases hormones like adrenaline. This chemical response often leads to myokymia, which is the medical term for eyelid twitching. While an eyelid spasm feels noticeable and distracting, it is usually harmless. You know it. But something keeps getting in the way at school: missed assignments, frustration with reading, trouble focusing in class. Before assuming it's a behavioral issue or a learning disability, it's worth asking a simpler question: Could it be their vision? This is a significant concern because, according to a UCLA study, nearly 80% of classroom learning is visual. Reading instructions, copying notes, and following lessons all depend on a child’s ability to clearly see and process visual information. Vision problems can affect a child’s learning and development by: Making it difficult to read, write, or see the board clearly Disrupting the hand-eye coordination needed for everyday schoolwork Causing eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue that make it harder to concentrate At Wink Eye Care, our doctors have provided children's eye exams for over two decades. We understand that vision problems can impact a child's confidence and success in the classroom. We're here to help you better understand the crucial link between your child's eyesight and their ability to learn, so you can take proactive steps towards their eye health. What Vision Skills Do Children Need to Learn Successfully? For a child to read comfortably, follow lessons, and complete schoolwork efficiently, several visual skills must work together. It's warm, inviting, and energizing. But along with that warmth comes an invisible threat to our eyes that many of us often overlook: UV radiation. At Wink Eye Care, Dr. Johnson has spent years helping patients understand that UV protection is a 365-day commitment. The sun doesn't take a break in the winter, and neither should your eye care routine. Fortunately, protecting your vision doesn't have to be complicated or stressful. With a few simple habits, you can enjoy the outdoors without worrying about long-term damage. Here's how you can protect your eyes from UV damage year-round: Recognize that UV damage accumulates over time. Wear sunglasses labeled "100% UV Protection" or "UV400" every time you go outside. Complement your sunglasses with other seasonal gear, such as wide-brimmed hats or sports goggles. Choose polarized lenses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces like snow, water, and sand. Schedule regular eye exams to catch early signs of sun damage. How Does UV Damage Your Eyes Over Time? You might be thinking, "My eyes feel fine after a day in the sun, so why worry? " The tricky thing about UV damage is that it's like a savings account you don't want: it adds up over a lifetime. But at Wink Eye Care, our doctors have been helping people with diabetes care for their eyes for decades. We have seen firsthand that regular diabetic eye exams are not something you should put off. Here is why regular eye exams are so crucial when you have diabetes: Diabetes puts a lot of stress on your eyes’ blood vessels Eye damage can start before vision changes appear Regular exams help catch problems early Eye exams work alongside your diabetes care When you have diabetes, regular eye exams play a critical role in preserving your sight and overall health for years to come. How Does Diabetes Actually Affect Your Eyes? High or fluctuating blood sugar is tough on your blood vessels. Think of it like this: high sugar levels make your blood thicker and stickier, stressing the vessel walls. Over time, this stress can cause them to weaken and leak. Since your eyes are full of tiny, delicate blood vessels, they are often one of the first and most significantly affected parts of the body. This gradual damage can lead to several diabetes-related eye conditions, including: Diabetic Retinopathy: This is the most common cause of vision loss, occurring when the tiny vessels in the retina swell, leak,... > From vision tests to dilation, see what happens in a comprehensive eye exam and why it matters. Early detection of vision issues can prevent long-term problems, giving your child the best possible start. At Wink Eye Care, our optometrists have been helping children see clearly for over 20 years. Every child develops at their own pace, but we've seen that certain milestones indicate their eyesight is developing properly: Babies (0–1 year): In the first year, babies should start making eye contact and tracking moving objects with their eyes. Toddlers (1–3 years): Toddlers typically begin recognizing familiar faces and colors while their hand-eye coordination improves. Preschoolers (3–5 years): By this age, children usually have clearer distance vision and can identify letters or basic shapes. School-Age (5+ years): School-aged children should be able to read a whiteboard from a distance and focus on close-up work without difficulty. Let's take a closer look at how children's eyes develop so you can get a feel for whether your child's vision is on track. How Does Your Child's Vision Develop Over Time? Just like learning to walk or talk, a child's vision develops in stages: Birth to 4 months: Babies can see objects up close but have blurry distance vision. 5 to 8 months: Depth perception starts to develop, allowing babies to reach for objects accurately. 9 to 12 months: Hand-eye coordination improves, and color vision fully develops.... > Blue light glasses don't reduce eye strain, studies show. It's exhausting, and frankly, it's frustrating. That's why so many people these days are reaching for blue light glasses, hoping they'll be the quick fix to finally stop the discomfort. The promise is tempting—slip them on, and suddenly your headaches and eye strain are gone. But here's the truth: while it would be great if the solution were that simple, the science tells a different story. At Wink Eye Care, we've spent years helping patients in St. John uncover the real reasons behind their digital eye strain, and the good news is, there are better ways to find lasting relief. The Truth About Blue Light Blue light isn't some mysterious, harmful ray; it's a type of light that exists naturally in sunlight and in many types of artificial lighting. Your digital screens also emit blue light, but in amounts far less than what you're exposed to every time you step outside. So why all the hype? Clever marketing has fueled the idea that blue light damages your eyes or disrupts your health, making it easy to believe that special glasses are the answer to your headaches and tired eyes. But research indicates that there's no solid evidence to suggest that blue light from screens causes eye damage. While exercises aren't a magic fix for most vision issues, they can play a powerful role in supporting healthier eyes. Let's explore how these techniques can help you maintain good eye health. What Are the Benefits of Eye Exercises? Before we dive into specific exercises, let's first understand how eye exercises can benefit our eyesight. Just like regular physical exercise strengthens our muscles and improves overall health, eye exercises work similarly. They help strengthen the muscles around the eyes and increase blood flow to the area, promoting healthier eyes. Some other potential benefits of eye exercises include: Reducing eyestrain and fatigue Improving focus and concentration Relieving tension headaches caused by eye strain Preventing or reducing symptoms of computer vision syndrome Of course, everyone's eyes are unique and may respond differently to these exercises. It's always best to consult with an eye doctor before starting any new exercises, especially if you have a pre-existing eye condition. Did you know 9 out of 10 public schools now provide students with their own electronic device for homework, textbooks, and classwork? That’s on top of the hours kids already spend gaming, watching TV, or scrolling after school. Screens aren’t going anywhere, but that doesn’t mean you have to let your child’s eyesight suffer. At Wink Eye Care, we’ve spent years helping parents protect their kids’ vision in this digital age. If you’re worried about how all that screen time might affect your child’s eye health, we're here for you. Let’s dive into the risks and the steps you can take to keep their eyes healthy and thriving. How Screen Time Affects Children’s Eyes Children’s eyes are still developing, making them more vulnerable to the effects of excessive screen use. Unlike adults, kids often get fully immersed in their digital activities, forgetting to take breaks or even blink regularly. This intense focus can lead to a range of issues that no parent wants to see. Eye Strain and Fatigue Have you noticed your child complaining of tired eyes or headaches after using a screen? These are common signs of digital eye strain. Staring at screens for extended periods forces the tiny muscles in their eyes to work overtime to focus, leaving them fatigued. Can carrots really improve your vision, or is this just another myth we’ve passed down over time? At Wink Eye Care, we’re passionate about eye health and helping our patients protect their vision. When it comes to the question of carrots and eyesight, the answer is both yes and no. While carrots do contain nutrients that support healthy eyes, they’re not a miracle cure for vision problems. Let’s dig into the science and sort fact from fiction. The Link Between Carrots and Eye Health Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a nutrient the body converts into vitamin A. And vitamin A? It’s a critical player when it comes to maintaining healthy eyes. It helps your eyes adjust to low light, keeps the surface of the eye moist, and prevents issues like dry eyes and night blindness. Some studies, like the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), even suggest that certain nutrients, including vitamin A, can play a role in reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss. But while carrots do a great job of supporting overall eye health, they won’t fix common issues like nearsightedness or astigmatism, which are caused by the shape of the eye. Nor can they cure more serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma or cataracts. Nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia) are two common conditions that can blur the lines—literally. These vision issues happen when your eyes struggle to focus light properly, making the world look less sharp and clear. While they affect your vision in opposite ways, both can have a big impact on your daily life. The good news? At Wink Eye Care, we’ve helped countless patients suffering from these conditions see the world in crystal-clear detail again. Let’s dive into what sets these conditions apart and how we can help you take control of your vision. What Is Nearsightedness (Myopia)? How Nearsightedness Impacts Vision If you’re nearsighted, objects that are close to you appear clear, but those far away look blurry. For example, you may have no trouble reading a book, but road signs in the distance could seem out of focus. Symptoms of Nearsightedness Common symptoms include: Blurry vision when looking at distant objects Squinting to see things far away Eye strain or fatigue Difficulty seeing clearly while driving, particularly at night Why Does Nearsightedness Happen? Nearsightedness occurs when the shape of your eye causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This may happen because: Your eyeball is longer than normal. Sunglasses are not just a fashionable accessory; they are crucial in protecting your eyes from harm. This blog will explore how sunglasses work, their benefits, and how to choose the right pair. How Sunglasses Protect Your Eyes Sunglasses do much more than help you look stylish; they are your eyes' first defense against several environmental hazards. Here’s a quick summary of how you can reduce the risk of eye infections: Practice proper hygiene. Take care of your contact lenses. Be mindful of your environment. Follow travel eye health precautions. Schedule regular eye exams. Understanding Eye Infections Eye infections occur when harmful microorganisms or irritants enter and affect your eyes. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, itching, or a pus-like discharge. While some infections are relatively mild, others, if untreated, can become more serious. Proactive care is the key to prevention. 1. Hygiene Practices for Eye Health Keeping your hands and eyes clean is your first line of defense against infections. Practice proper handwashing Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before touching your face or eyes. Avoid touching your eyes Consciously avoid rubbing your eyes, even if they feel itchy or irritated, to prevent bacterial transfer. Keeping your hands clean substantially reduces your risk of infection. 2. Contact Lens Care If you wear contact lenses, improper care can lead to infections. Wearing them without proper precautions can have serious consequences for your eye health. At Wink Eye Care, we've seen firsthand the risks associated with improper use of colored contacts. If you've ever wondered, "Are colored contacts dangerous? " or are curious about how to wear them responsibly, here's everything you need to know. The Dangers of Non-Prescription Colored Contacts Not all colored contacts are safe to use—especially those sold without a prescription. Here's why purchasing non-prescription or cheaply-made colored contacts can put your eyes at risk: 1. Eye Damage Non-prescription colored contacts often don't fit properly on the eye. Poorly fitting lenses can scrape against the cornea, causing corneal abrasions. These tiny scratches may seem minor at first but can make your eyes vulnerable to infections and discomfort. 2. Corneal Ulcers and Eye Infections Colored contacts obtained without professional fitting can trap bacteria against the eye's surface. This can lead to severe infections such as keratitis, which harms the cornea. If left untreated, these infections can cause irreversible damage within hours. 3. Age and Vision: Understanding Presbyopia If you're over 40 and noticing changes in your ability to focus on close objects, you might be experiencing presbyopia. This is a natural part of aging, where the lens inside your eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on nearby text or objects. It starts subtly. Tasks like reading fine print or looking at your phone screens can begin feeling more challenging, especially in low-light settings. Common Causes of Eye Pain Identifying the source of your eye pain is the first step to finding the right solution. Below are the most common culprits, along with their symptoms and causes. 1. Eye Strain Symptoms: Tired, sore eyes; difficulty focusing; headaches. Eye strain often results from overuse of digital screens, incorrect prescription glasses, or prolonged focus on an object without breaks. This condition is increasingly common as more people work and socialize online. Research estimates that nearly 50% of people suffer from this condition. 2. Dry Eyes Symptoms: Itchy, burning, or gritty feelings in the eyes. Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Many young athletes face challenges on the field or court, but what if the issue isn't about skills, effort, or practice? What if it's a vision problem? Research estimates that there are 450 million children globally who have a sight condition that needs treatment. This means that many young athletes may be held back by undiagnosed vision issues. At Wink Eye Care, we have spent years providing pediatric eye care and believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. In this post, we'll discuss how vision affects sports performance, signs of vision problems, and steps parents can take to support their young athletes. Understanding Vision in Sports Vision is far more than just seeing clearly. For young athletes, vision impacts their ability to perform in various ways. Sports require dynamic vision skills that are essential to success on the field, in the water, or at the hoop. Some of these skills include: Dynamic Visual Acuity: The ability to see moving objects clearly, vital in sports like baseball or tennis. Eye Tracking: Keeping focus on a fast-moving ball or player. Depth Perception: Judging distances accurately, essential for basketball, soccer, and hockey. Peripheral Vision: Being aware of surroundings while focusing on a specific target—helpful in team sports like football and soccer. Eye-Hand Coordination: Converting visual information into precise movement, critical for sports like volleyball or hitting a baseball. Whether it's seasonal or year-round, managing eye allergies is crucial for anyone seeking relief and improved quality of life. At Wink Eye Care, our lead eye doctor has practiced optometry for over 20 years and has found many effective solutions for patients with eye allergies. In this article, we'll delve into the common causes of eye allergies and how you can help alleviate symptoms. Common Causes of Eye Allergies Eye allergies happen when your immune system reacts to specific allergens that come into contact with your eyes. These allergy triggers, also known as allergens, can be found both indoors and outdoors. The most common indoor irritants are dust mites, pet dander, mold, and smoke. Outdoor allergens include pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds. Exposure to these substances causes an inflammatory response in your eyes, resulting in the uncomfortable symptoms associated with eye allergies. Another factor that can contribute to eye allergies is genetics. You may be more likely to develop eye allergies if you have a family history of allergic conditions like asthma, eczema, or hay fever. Identifying Eye Allergy Symptoms Recognizing the symptoms of eye allergies is essential for distinguishing them from other eye conditions. Common signs include itchiness, redness, burning sensation, and watery eyes. In some cases, you might... > Don't ignore your eye health. Your eyes deserve the best care, and timely attention can make all the difference. Signs It's Time to See an Eye Doctor Changes in Vision Your vision is constantly changing, which is a natural part of aging. However, if your vision changes drastically, you must seek professional help immediately. This could include blurred vision, difficulty seeing at night, or increased sensitivity to light. These symptoms could be indicative of underlying conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. Catching these issues early can keep them from progressing and causing permanent vision loss. Frequent Headaches While various factors can cause headaches, they should not be ignored when they occur regularly and are accompanied by visual disturbances. These could be warning signs of a serious eye condition such as astigmatism, which can cause irregularities in the shape of your cornea and lead to headaches and eye strain. From shopping to medical consultations, technology makes it possible to do almost everything online. But when it comes to eye health, can remote exams truly match the depth and accuracy of in-person eye exams? If you've been debating whether to opt for a remote or in-person eye exam, the professionals at Wink Eye Care are here to help you understand why in-person exams are the better choice for your vision health. We've been helping patients achieve optimal eye health for years, and we've seen first-hand the difference that in-person exams can make. Unmatched Accuracy: The Importance of a Hands-On Exam While remote exams offer convenience, they cannot match the accuracy of an in-person eye exam. According to the American Optometric Association, in-person exams can detect over 270 diseases. During these exams, your optometrist can physically examine your eyes, checking for common vision conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. This hands-on approach is lost with remote exams, making it challenging for your optometrist to accurately assess your eye health. Additionally, in-person exams allow the use of specialized equipment to obtain a detailed view of your eye's anatomy, identifying potential issues that may not be visible to the naked eye. This level of precision is unattainable through remote exams, where the use of such advanced equipment is often limited or absent. With so many brands, styles, colors, and shapes available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. However, understanding your face shape can simplify the process and ensure you select the perfect frames. The right pair of glasses not only enhances your vision but also complements your facial features, boosting your confidence and style. In this post, we will explore how to identify your face shape and highlight the types of glasses that best complement each shape. By the end, you'll be well-equipped to find your perfect pair of glasses. Understanding Face Shapes What Is a Face Shape? The structure and proportions of your facial features determine your face shape. The key areas to consider are the width of your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline, as well as the length of your face. Recognizing your face shape is the first step in finding glasses that flatter your look. Common Face Shapes Explained There are several common face shapes, each with unique characteristics: Round: Equal width and length with soft angles. Oval: Balanced proportions with a slightly longer length than width. Square: Strong jawline and broad forehead with proportional length and width. Heart: Wide forehead and cheekbones with a narrow chin. Diamond: Narrow forehead and chin with wide cheekbones. Yet, in the midst of all the excitement, we often forget to safeguard one of our most crucial senses—our eyesight. With increased exposure to UV rays, chlorine in pools, and the general dryness of the season, our eyes face unique challenges. Wink Eye Care is here to provide insight into some common summer vision hazards and eight practical tips to keep your eyes safe. By the end, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy the summer sun without compromising your eye health. Common Summer Vision Hazards With all its brightness and warmth, summer brings several risks to our eye health. The most prominent of these risks is exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Research has shown that the front surface of the eye absorbs 99% of UV radiation. Prolonged exposure to this radiation can cause severe eye issues like cataracts and macular degeneration. These conditions, if not addressed, can cause significant deterioration in vision over time. Another summer hazard is dry eyes. The hot and often windy weather can decrease eye moisture, causing discomfort and irritation. Additionally, air-conditioned environments, which are a respite from the heat, can further exacerbate this issue by drying out the indoor air. Swimming pools, while refreshing, can also pose a risk to eye health. The chlorine used to keep pool water clean can irritate the eyes, leading to redness and discomfort. In some cases, it can even cause a more severe condition known as chemical conjunctivitis. 8 Ways to... > Discover the importance of annual eye exams near St. John with Wink Eye Care to detect vision problems early and safeguard your overall health. - Published: 2024-05-07 - Modified: 2026-07-20 - URL: https://winkeyecarenwi.com/why-are-annual-eye-exams-important/ - Categories: Children's Eye Exams, Comprehensive Eye Exams - Tags: comprehensive eye exams, Eye doctor NW Indiana, eye exam, Lowell Eye Doctor Despite the critical role that vision plays in our day-to-day lives, it is alarming that only half of adults prioritize getting an annual eye exam. This negligence not only jeopardizes one's visual health but can also hinder the early detection of other severe health conditions. Understanding this pressing issue, Wink Eye Care is dedicated to educating and advocating for the importance of regular eye examinations. Our mission is to illuminate the myriad benefits of proactive eye care, from preserving eyesight to enhancing overall well-being. The Importance of Regular Eye Exams Regular eye exams are an essential component of maintaining good visual health. They involve a series of tests that assess various aspects of your eyes, including vision acuity, eye muscle movement, and overall eye health. While some people may feel that their vision is fine and skip annual exams, it is crucial to note that many eye conditions do not present noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye exams can help detect and address potential problems before they become more severe and cause permanent vision loss. Detecting Vision Problems One of the most critical benefits of annual eye exams is detecting vision problems that may otherwise go unnoticed. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, preventing conditions from worsening and potentially causing irreversible vision loss. Some common vision problems that can be detected during eye exams include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. These conditions can usually be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or, in some cases, surgery. Early Detection... > Discover compassionate Cedar Lake myopia care and personalized treatment options at Wink Eye Care. With the American Academy of Ophthalmology projecting that almost half the world's population will be myopic by 2050, it's clear that understanding and effectively managing myopia is as essential as any other health routine. That's why at Wink Eye Care, our utmost dedication is to ensure that you are well-informed, guided, and supported every step of the way. Understanding Myopia Myopia, fundamentally, is a refractive error that makes it challenging to see distant objects. The eyeball grows too long from front to back, which causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. The result is as frustrating as it sounds – distant signs become indecipherable, and the world beyond a few feet can appear notably blurry. If you find yourself straining to see faraway objects, experiencing frequent headaches, struggling with nighttime vision, and unconsciously avoiding tasks that require good far-sightedness, it may be time to address your visual needs. Treatment Options for Myopia Modern optometry has brought forth many options for myopia treatment, each tailored to the unique needs and lifestyle of the individual. Traditionally reliable, eyeglasses and contact lenses are the first line of defense for many people with myopia. With advancements in lens technology, from high-index lenses that are thinner and lighter to multifocal contact lenses, choices for myopic correction have never been more diverse. Another option is... > Experience total eye comfort with Wink Eye Care's tips on preventing digital eye strain. However, this continuous interaction with screens comes at a cost—one that most of us have experienced: digital eye strain. Many diverse factors worsen digital eye strain. Let's explore these and discover strategies to protect your peepers from extended screen time, ensuring that you can work, play, and thrive in the digital age without the ache of tired eyes. Understanding Digital Eye Strain Digital eye strain is a frequent condition that almost every digital screen user experiences at some point. The symptoms are varied and may include: Eyestrain Headaches Blurred vision Neck and shoulder pain Dry eyes Sleep disturbances, especially after prolonged use at night Contrary to popular belief, digital eye strain is not caused by overuse or the blue light emitted by screens, as stated by The American Academy of Ophthalmology. Instead, it is simply a result of our tendency to stare and blink less while using screens. Factors such as inadequate lighting, glare, improper viewing distances, poor posture, and uncorrected vision problems can encourage us to stare more, worsening digital eye strain. Awareness of these factors is essential to prevent and alleviate the discomfort associated with prolonged screen use. The 20-20-20 Rule and How to Apply It to Your Workday At Wink Eye Care, we believe simple strategies can make a remarkable difference. One such tactic is the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes you look at a screen, you... ## City-State > Protect your vision and enjoy the outdoors with custom prescription sunglasses in Lowell.
